Week five:  February 21 - 28

Read "Ideology, Life Practices, and Pop Culture" by Karen Fitts

This week we are reading the article "Ideology, Life Practices, and Pop Culture" by Karen Fitts.  This article will begin our discussion of how we create a curriculum that supports a writing class.  In the next few weeks, we will begin to investigate writing classrooms that aren't really about writing at all.  It is a difficult move to figure out how you will teach writing. This article begins to articulate this discussion for us.

Everyone will complete a Blog or Vlog for this reading.  You can think a little more informally about this response.  For this blog/vlog, I think what would be interesting is to consider some ways that you could engage your students in the writing process. What avenues could you investigate?  I find that when I am really interested in a curriculum it transfers to my students.  You get to be creative here! What class would you want to teach? What would you want to focus on?   Please use proper English grammar and syntax.  The blog should be at least 150 words or 3 minutes for the vlog.

You can choose to complete a microtheme paper for this article.  You will need to complete 3 microtheme papers during this course. In this paper, you should consider a more formal approach.  Organizational aspects of the paper are important. In the microtheme paper, you should be discussing an idea that you see tied to writing and reading practices in the classroom. I'd like you to think about the classroom that Karen Fitts suggests that we have and how the curriculum for a writing classroom can look.  How do the assignments she creates facilitate the learning objectives for her course? Do you think that this is a logical progression? What could work/not work with her plan?

These papers are 4 pages long in correct MLA or APA format and should cite all of your material properly. Spelling and grammar count, too. You should be quoting and citing in these papers and they should include a separate (not counted towards the 4-page minimum) Works Cited or Reference page.

Good luck!
